How the Assistant Coach Works

Ask anything about your roster — in plain English — and get a direct answer backed by WaiverWire's own projection engine, live matchup data, and injury intelligence.Like having a fantasy analyst on call 24/7, without the hot takes.

What it can do

Three core decisions, handled

Connect your league once and the Coach has your full roster in context — so every answer is personalized to your actual team, not a generic player ranking.

Sit / Start

Compare any two or more players head-to-head for your lineup. The Coach surfaces the projection gap, matchup signal, and risk profile so you always know the why behind the pick.

Waiver wire

Ask for the best available at any position — the Coach filters to players not already rostered in your league, ranks by projected upside, and flags bye and injury considerations before you add.

Trade evaluation

Drop in any trade offer and get an honest verdict: who wins, what the value gap is, and whether it makes sense for your specific team's situation — contender vs. rebuilder, injuries, and format.

The engine

What's actually behind every answer

The Coach doesn't just repeat rankings from the internet — it reasons over WaiverWire's own projection pipeline and layers on several additional signals for each decision.

Six blended projection models

Each player's baseline projection is the output of six forecast models run together, blended for stability. The blend reduces the impact of any single model's blind spots.

Defense vs. Position (DvP)

Every recommendation accounts for the opponent's historical and current-season tendency to give up fantasy points at each position. A soft matchup is a real signal, not just a talking point.

Vegas game environment

Implied team totals and game spreads from the Vegas market feed into projections. A high-total, fast-paced game lifts pass-catchers; a projected blowout changes game script assumptions.

Three-factor risk profile

Beyond the projection, each player is scored on floor, ceiling, and week-to-week consistency — letting the Coach account for your specific league context, like whether you need upside to catch the leader or need a safe floor to protect a small edge.

15+ years of research behind the signals. The projection methodology draws on over 15 years of portfolio-theory research applied to fantasy scoring — the same philosophy that powers the cheat sheet rankings. Outputs are graded weekly so the engine improves with every game.

FAQ

Common questions

What kinds of questions can I ask?
Anything roster-related: sit/start decisions, waiver wire pickups, drop candidates, trade evaluation (fair or not, who wins the deal), streaming options, and league-specific strategy. You can ask in plain English — 'Should I start AJ Brown or CeeDee Lamb this week?' — and you'll get a direct answer with the reasoning behind it.
Does it need to know my roster?
Connect your Sleeper, ESPN, Yahoo, or CBS league and the Coach auto-fills your full roster, bye weeks, injury designations, and opponent matchups for the current week. Once connected, every answer is personalized to your actual team — no manual entry required.
How does it decide who to start or sit?
The Coach runs each player through a multi-model projection system, then adjusts for their opponent's defensive strength at the position (Defense vs. Position) and the game environment from Vegas implied totals. It also weights a three-factor risk profile — floor, ceiling, and consistency — so it can account for your league's scoring format and your personal risk tolerance. The final recommendation balances all of these signals and explains which ones drove the call.
Will it ask me clarifying questions?
Yes — when more context would sharpen the answer, the Coach asks before responding. For example, if you ask 'who should I start at WR?' without specifying your format, it'll confirm PPR vs. standard. If you say 'is this trade fair?' it may ask how many weeks are left in your season and whether you're a contender or rebuilding.
How current is the data it uses?
Projections update weekly as new injury reports, depth charts, and Vegas lines come in. Matchup data refreshes throughout the week. Injury designations (Q, D, IR) are pulled in near-real-time so if a key player is downgraded Saturday morning, that's reflected in the recommendation.
Is it the same as ChatGPT but for fantasy?
No — this isn't a general-purpose AI using the internet. The Coach is grounded in WaiverWire's own proprietary projection engine, your specific league's context, and curated NFL data. It won't hallucinate stats or make up injury information. Every recommendation traces back to a real number in the system.
What tier do I need?
The Assistant Coach is included in WaiverWire Pro ($59/year). Pro gives you 150 Coach questions per month, plus the full cheat sheet board, Bulls vs. Bears, and Open Field. WaiverWire Edge (our top tier) includes unlimited Coach queries plus advanced signals and the Waiver War Room.
Does it remember previous conversations?
Yes — your conversation history is saved so the Coach can refer back to earlier questions in the same session. If you asked about a trade earlier and then ask a follow-up waiver question, it already knows your roster situation from the previous exchange.
Can it handle superflex or dynasty leagues?
Yes. When you connect your league or specify your format, the Coach adjusts QB valuations accordingly. In superflex leagues it weights QB streaming decisions differently and accounts for the extra starting slot. Dynasty questions (buy-low candidates, age curves, devy) are also in scope.
