Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups

Allgeier, Washington, then Mitchell

By the WaiverWire crew.

The back the other lists told you to drop last week just ran for 147 yards, and now he's the only healthy back his team has. Our first claim last week got seven snaps, all on special teams. Both of those are in the book below.

We checked rosters in 17 leagues our members have connected. When you see "free in 5 of 17," that's where the number comes from. These leagues run deep, about 209 rostered players each versus roughly 190 in a standard 12-team league, so if yours is shallower, more of these are free.

Points are half-PPR. Share prices are Tuesday's board. Claims run Wednesday morning. Jaguars at Ravens is Thursday night, and Bengals at Falcons is the 9:30am ET international game Sunday, so set those early. The Steelers and Titans are on bye.

The 20-second version

  • Tyler Allgeier, RB, ARI. FAAB $10. Exchange $8.91. 147 yards, two scores, and the only healthy back on the roster. Free in 5 of 17.
  • Mike Washington Jr., RB, LV. FAAB $10. Exchange $3.16. 25 carries. We passed last week. That was wrong. Free in 7 of 17.
  • Adonai Mitchell, WR, NYJ. FAAB $4. Exchange $9.55. 9 targets, 142 yards. Free in 11 of 17.
  • Dylan Sampson, RB, CLE. FAAB $4. Exchange $9.69. 8 targets and more snaps than the starter. Free in 11 of 17.
  • Antonio Williams, WR, WAS. FAAB $3. Exchange $6.71. 83% of the snaps, 7 targets. Free in 12 of 17.

That's priority order, not price order. None of these five play Thursday. If Allgeier is gone, start with Washington.

These bids assume you still have budget. If you're down to your last $20, the order matters more than the number: Allgeier, then Washington, then stop.

Probably rostered, but check: Jonah Coleman is free in 2 of 17. If he's on your wire, he goes first. Braelon Allen and Rachaad White are free in 1 of 17.

The reasons are below.

Last week's book

Every ranked claim this season, seven emails, 35 names: 16 misses, 13 pushes, 6 hits. Waiver claims are long shots by design. If a player were a sure thing, he wouldn't be on the wire. A hit is when the points arrived (roughly 12 or more in half-PPR), a push is when the role held but the points didn't, and a miss is neither. A push usually means the claim worked and the week didn't.

Everything else we graded here, the holds, dips, sells and the probably-rostered names: 48 calls, 32 right, 16 wrong.

Last week's ranked five: 3 misses, 1 push, 1 hit.

  • Miss: Emanuel Wilson. Seven snaps, all on special teams. Zach Charbonnet made his season debut and Jadarian Price came off IR the same night. Both were eligible to come back, and we didn't tell you that. That one's on us.
  • Miss: Omar Cooper Jr. 78% of the snaps and zero targets. Adonai Mitchell got 9.
  • Miss: Zonovan Knight. Hurt early. 22% of the snaps, 0.3 points, and he's in the concussion protocol.
  • Push: Chig Okonkwo. 77% of the snaps, 4 targets, 2 catches for 32, and a lost fumble, 2.2 points. The snaps held.
  • Hit: Jonah Coleman. 66% of the snaps, 11 carries, 41 yards, a touchdown, 4 catches for 63, 18.4 points. RJ Harvey is now on IR.

The next four went 0 hits, 3 pushes, 1 miss. Pushes: Dylan Sampson (56% of the snaps, 8 targets, 9.9), Caleb Douglas (86%, 6 targets, 6.3), Antonio Williams (83%, 7 targets, 7.9). Miss: Dameon Pierce, who went on IR the day after we sent it.

Off the ranked list:

  • Right: Tyler Allgeier, the hold. The other lists had him on their drop list. 11 carries, 147 yards, a touchdown, 5 catches, 44 yards, another touchdown, 33.6 points. He's first this week if he's free.
  • Right: Josh Downs, the hold. 4 catches, a touchdown, 10.3.
  • Right: the probably-rostered tier. Tony Pollard 27.2, Braelon Allen 22.3, Rachaad White 13.0.
  • Right: Matthew Golden, the hold. 13 targets, a touchdown, 17.4.
  • Right: the Henderson drop and the Bass kicker add. Henderson didn't play. Bass scored 16.
  • Wrong: Mike Washington Jr. We said not chasing. He got 25 carries on 60% of the snaps. He's second this week.
  • Wrong: Michael Penix Jr. We called him a stream. Four interceptions, 2.1 points.
  • Wrong: the A.J. Brown dip. He didn't play (knee).
  • Wrong: MarShawn Lloyd, the hold. His snaps fell to 16%. 2.1 points. He's in Sell / Drop this week.
  • Wrong: Chris Godwin, the hold, and Garrett Wilson, "don't buy the dip." Godwin drew 1 target. Wilson drew 12 and scored 11.3, just under our hit line.
  • Still holding: Kyle Monangai. Questionable again, now listed with a thumb sprain. D'Andre Swift had 27 carries and three touchdowns. We don't have a return date. Hold.

Buy: ranked claims ($100 FAAB)

Our projections lag a role change by about a week, so we use them as a ceiling on the bid, not a forecast. Allgeier's 33.6 isn't in his 7.2-a-game projection below yet.

1. Tyler Allgeier, RB, ARI. FAAB $10. Exchange $8.91.
The usage: 59% of the snaps, 11 carries, 147 yards, a touchdown, 5 catches, 44 yards, another touchdown, 33.6 points. The week before was 47% and 6.4.
The opening: Jeremiyah Love left Sunday with the ankle again, and Zonovan Knight is in the concussion protocol. Gardner Minshew is the new starting quarterback. Who's coming back: Love and Knight at some point, and James Conner is eligible to come off IR, though Arizona hasn't opened his practice window. Arizona may add a back this week too, so this is the lead for now, not for the season. Updated projection 7.2 a game. The share doubled from $4.58. If Love or Knight practices in full Wednesday, cut the bid to $6.
Free in 5 of 17. Cardinals at Seahawks, Sunday 4:25pm ET.

2. Mike Washington Jr., RB, LV. FAAB $10. Exchange $3.16.
The usage: 60% of the snaps, 25 carries, 83 yards, 8.3 points, no catches. The week before was 27% and 6 carries.
The opening: Ashton Jeanty had 2 carries. He said the coaches told him before the game that Washington would be the featured back. Coach Klint Kubiak called the split a "moving target," so it could swing back. 3.3 yards a carry isn't pretty, but 25 carries is the scarcest thing on any wire. It's volume without the points yet, which is the kind we'd rather buy. The other lists have him at $10 to $12, and he's on every one of them, so a smaller bid probably loses him. Updated projection 5.0 a game. The share is $3.16, the cheapest 25-carry back on the board.
Free in 7 of 17. Raiders at 49ers, Sunday 4:05pm ET.

3. Adonai Mitchell, WR, NYJ. FAAB $4. Exchange $9.55.
The usage: 61% of the snaps, 9 targets, 7 catches, 142 yards, a touchdown, 23.7 points. The week before was 44% of the snaps, 3 targets, 0 catches.
The opening: Garrett Wilson had 12 targets and Omar Cooper had zero. The Jets' second receiver has been a different player each week, so this is $4 and not $10. Updated projection 4.8 a game.
Free in 11 of 17. Jets at Chiefs, Sunday 1pm ET.

4. Dylan Sampson, RB, CLE. FAAB $4. Exchange $9.69.
The usage: 56% of the snaps, 8 targets, 6 catches, 62 yards, 1 carry for 7, 9.9 points. Quinshon Judkins played 39% and scored 5.9.
The opening: Cleveland trailed, and Sampson is the passing-down back. If the Browns are behind again, he plays more than the starter again. If they're ahead, Judkins gets the carries. Updated projection 4.9 a game.
Free in 11 of 17. Browns at Saints, Sunday 1pm ET.

5. Antonio Williams, WR, WAS. FAAB $3. Exchange $6.71.
The usage: 83% of the snaps, up from 67%. 7 targets, 5 catches, 54 yards, 7.9 points.
The opening: Terry McLaurin is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon. Four Commanders got 5 or more targets, so nobody owns the room yet, but Williams led them in targets and snaps. Updated projection 5.4 a game.
Free in 12 of 17, the most available name in the five. Rams at Commanders, Sunday 1pm ET.

Probably rostered. Claim him if he's free.

  • Jonah Coleman, RB, DEN. Free in 2 of 17. FAAB $12. Exchange $10.59. 66% of the snaps, 18.4 points, and RJ Harvey is on IR until at least Week 13. J.K. Dobbins played 21%. If he's on your wire, he goes ahead of Allgeier. Broncos at Panthers, Sunday 1pm ET.
  • Braelon Allen, RB, NYJ. Free in 1 of 17. 83% of the snaps, 21 carries, 147 yards, a touchdown, 22.3. Breece Hall still has no line, but the coach says he's "close." FAAB $10 if he's there, $5 if Hall practices in full. Jets at Chiefs, Sunday 1pm ET.
  • Rachaad White, RB, WAS. Free in 1 of 17. 47% of the snaps, 11 carries, a touchdown, 13.0. FAAB $5 if he's there. Rams at Commanders, Sunday 1pm ET.

If those five are gone

In this order.

  • DeMario Douglas, WR, NE. FAAB $3. Exchange $11.12. 65% of the snaps, 3 targets, 3 catches, 76 yards, a touchdown, 15.1. Three targets is thin. A.J. Brown missed with the knee and Hunter Henry left early with a foot injury. Mack Hollins can also come back to practice this week. If Brown practices in full Wednesday, cut the bid to $1. Free in 8 of 17. Packers at Patriots, Sunday 4:25pm ET.
  • Mike Gesicki, TE, CIN. FAAB $2. Exchange $12.39. 68% of the snaps, up from 38%. 6 targets, 4 catches, 76 yards, a touchdown, 15.6. Two weeks, two touchdowns. Don't pay the share. Free in 11 of 17. Bengals at Falcons, Sunday 9:30am ET, so set him Saturday night.
  • Ryan Flournoy, WR, DAL. FAAB $2. Exchange $9.59. 68% of the snaps, 4 targets, a touchdown, 11.6, after 9.0 and 13.5. Steady, not loud. Free in 10 of 17. Cowboys at Colts, Sunday 1pm ET.
  • Stash: Seth McGowan, RB, IND. FAAB $2. Exchange $3.47. 25% of the snaps, 5 carries, 2.9. Today he's the backup. The reason to hold him is the trade deadline, Nov 10: NFL Network and ESPN both report the Colts are in active talks on Jonathan Taylor. If Taylor is traded, McGowan is the next back. Free in 9 of 17.

Also on the board

  • Dart, only if Henry sits: Eli Raridon, TE, NE. FAAB $1. He played 92% of the snaps after Henry left, but caught 1 of 4 targets for 1.0 point. Coach Mike Vrabel says he has no expectations yet on Henry. Free in 12 of 17.
  • Stash: Kaelon Black, RB, SF. FAAB $2. The 49ers are back from the bye. Christian McCaffrey is still questionable (calf). Free in 7 of 17.
  • Quarterback, if you need one: Gardner Minshew, ARI. Named the starter Monday. He came in late in the third quarter, down 17-3 in Dallas, and threw 3 touchdowns for 19.5 points in relief. Free in 16 of 17. Cardinals at Seahawks, Sunday 4:25pm ET. Geno Smith is the steadier stream: 19.0, 24.5 and 13.0 the last three weeks. Free in 10 of 17. Jets at Chiefs, Sunday 1pm ET.
  • Kicker: Tyler Bass, K, BUF. FAAB $1. Exchange $13.16. 16 points Sunday, 17 the game before. Free in 10 of 17. Bills at Vikings, Monday 8:15pm ET.

Where we differ

  • Emmett Johnson. The other lists have him at $10. He played 19% of the snaps and had 1 carry. One 73-yard catch made the day. Kenneth Walker played 81%. We're not chasing.
  • Seth McGowan. The other lists have him at $8 to $10. The trade talks are real. The job isn't his yet. We'd pay $2 and wait for the deadline.
  • Mike Washington Jr. The other lists have him first. We have him second because Tyler Allgeier isn't on their list. He's rostered in too many leagues to make their cut. In ours, he's free in 5 of 17.
  • Xavier Worthy. On the other drop lists. His snaps went up when Rashee Rice came back, 87% to 94%, the most of any Chiefs receiver. 6 targets, 2.8 points. The points haven't come. Hold another week.
  • Chris Godwin. We held him last week, and he drew 1 target on 82% of the snaps. We're not defending him anymore. Every name in our top five is worth more to you than Godwin is.

Trade for / buy the dip

  • Kenneth Walker III, RB, KC. Exchange $18.16, down from $20.73. 81% of the snaps, 21 carries, 69 yards, 4 catches, 10.4 points. The carries held. The points didn't. Updated projection 18.8 a game. Chiefs host the Jets, Sunday 1pm ET.
  • Jonathan Taylor, RB, IND. Exchange $13.94, down from $18.82. 62% of the snaps, 8 carries, 4.7 points with a lost fumble, in a game the Colts trailed 28-0 at the half. Updated projection 17.1 a game. The risk is the trade: a new team could use him differently. The deadline is Nov 10, so the price is about where he plays, not how good he is. Cowboys at Colts, Sunday 1pm ET.
  • Not this week: A.J. Brown. We said buy the dip last week and he didn't play. Vrabel says, "we'll see how he progresses." Wait for a practice.

Sell / Drop

  • Emanuel Wilson, RB, SEA. Seven snaps, all on special teams. Charbonnet and Price are both back. His share fell from $9.79 to $6.31. Cut him unless you're stashing for another Seattle injury.
  • Jacoby Brissett, QB, ARI. Benched Sunday and moved to the emergency third spot Monday. Cut him.
  • TreVeyon Henderson, RB, NE. Missed Sunday with an illness, after 24% of the snaps in each of the two weeks before. Cut him.
  • MarShawn Lloyd, RB, GB. We said hold last week. His snaps fell to 16%, 2.1 points. Cut him unless you roster Josh Jacobs.
  • Mark Andrews, TE, BAL. We held him against the other drop lists in September and again last week. We were wrong. Four straight weeks under 4 points, his snaps fell from 72% to 57%, and now Lamar Jackson is headed to IR. If you need the spot, he can go.
  • Not a cut: Zonovan Knight, RB, ARI. He's in the concussion protocol. That's a short-term injury. Hold him if you can carry him, and claim Allgeier either way.

On the Exchange

Washington at $3.16 is the cheapest 25-carry back on the board, because the share hasn't caught up to one big week yet. Allgeier doubled to $8.91 and Mitchell nearly doubled to $9.55, so the cheap entry on those two is gone. If you're buying one share this week, buy the carries.

For the group chat

Tyler Allgeier. 147 yards, two scores, and the only healthy back in Arizona. Claim him Wednesday.
